Many universities in the USA require SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores as part of their admission criteria. However, there is no officially defined minimum score for most universities. Instead, based on historical data and admissions trends, we can estimate the SAT scores that universities typically consider. Each university has its own admission requirements, and the SAT score expectations vary accordingly.

General SAT Score Expectations

The SAT is scored out of 1600 points and consists of two main sections:
- Reading & Writing – Scored out of 800
- Mathematics – Scored out of 800

The total score is the sum of these two sections. Most universities consider SAT scores between 1200 and 1400 as competitive. However, different institutions have different score expectations.

SAT Score Ranges for U.S. Universities

Prestigious universities in the USA — such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Yale — typically consider applicants with SAT scores between 1400 and 1600. These institutions prioritize students with outstanding academic achievements.

Example SAT Score Ranges for Top Universities:

- Harvard University: Average SAT score 1500–1600

- MIT & Stanford: Average SAT score 1480–1600

Some universities, however, accept students with scores around 1100–1300, making them more accessible to a wider range of applicants. Additionally, specific programs— such as engineering and mathematics — may require higher SAT scores than other fields.

Do All U.S. Universities Require the SAT?

No! Many universities are now test-optional, meaning you can apply without submitting SAT scores. This trend has grown since the COVID-19 pandemic, and some schools focus more on GPA, essays, and recommendation letters rather than standardized test scores.

Although SAT requirements differ among universities, a score between 1200 and 1400 is considered acceptable for many institutions. However, for top-ranked universities like Harvard and MIT, competitive applicants typically score between 1500 and 1600.

It’s also important to remember that SAT scores are just one factor in the admissions process. Universities also evaluate applicants based on GPA, essays, recommendation letters, and extracurricular achievements.
